You get up in the morning and you have your cup of coffee and then you get ready for work. When you are trying to decide on what to wear, do you ever wander what "hat" you are going to wear for the day. The reason for the question is that with the various jobs in the district level decreasing ours as Postmasters seemed to be ever increasing. Our positions as postmasters are not just managing the delivery of mail and providing service to our community in which we serve, but in fact we are Human Resources Specialist, Address Management Specialist, Marketing Specialist, Finical Analysts, Labor Relations experts, Security Specialist, Mailing Requirements, and so on, you get my point. Our day is filled with tasks that need to be completed emphasizing those job functions, and to prove that we have completed them we are to respond to the managers associated with them, and in the mean time get that mail delivered. I spent almost an hour one-day re-responding to some of these experts in the district level because they didn’t get my first response. If it weren’t for the fact I kept copies of the first response and the dates in which they were sent I would have been up that proverbial creek without a paddle. I wish I had a day where all I worry or ponder activities around was just one function, I think it would be fun to send an email out and say, "we need to sell more stamps" or "lets not forget to count stock."
I am not trying to take away from the importance of these functions; they are needed in order to help the Post Office survive. It would be nice to be able to make contact with these managers when we need to, or at least have some of them return a call. My thought here is "dang" give us a break, what happen to providing SUPPORT instead of requiring REPORTS. Now recently added to some of the smaller offices, who are tapped with little or no help at all are now required to input Express Labels and more recent the scanning of PO Box up time. I am proud to be a Postmaster, as I know all that is reading this is as well. We like doing a good job, serving of customers with the best possible service, but you know I would like to have the time to provide that service instead of worrying about what hat or hats I need to wear or what report I need to complete. Keep your head up (so you can wear your hat) and do the best that you can, notify your POOM if you are unable to complete an assignment timely and make and keep records of that contact.
